Despite the fact that we are
still in the middle of the iPhone 16 release cycle, we do know a lot about the
models of the iPhone 17 that will be released in 2025. This could be one of the
biggest changes to the design of the iPhone since the 2017 iPhone X. Apple is
rumored to be planning for an all-new iPhone 17 "Air" that will have
a design that is much thinner, a new display size, a different look for the
camera, and more.
We anticipate four models in
total in 2025: the iPhone 17, the iPhone 17 Pro, the iPhone 17 Pro Max, and the
brand-new iPhone 17 "Air." There won't be an iPhone 17 Plus because
Apple is dropping the "Plus" line because it hasn't been popular with
customers. Instead of directly replacing the iPhone 17 Plus, the thinner iPhone
17 will debut as a new device option in the lineup. Rumors suggest that the forthcoming device
will have a display that is approximately 6.6 inches wide and a chassis that is
no more than 6 millimeters thick.
The iPhone 17 Air is comparable
to the MacBook Air or iPad Air when compared to the Mac and iPad lineups,
whereas the iPhone 17 Pro is comparable to the MacBook Pro or iPad Pro. Because the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max will
have 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch display sizes, the iPhone 17 Air will come in right
in the middle of those two devices in terms of size. The standard iPhone 17 may also get bigger
overall, but if that happens, it will be 6.3 inches. It's not entirely clear
whether Apple will continue to use the 6.1-inch display size for the standard
iPhone 17 or if that size update is still in the works.
At first, it was thought that the
thinner iPhone 17 Air would be a high-end device that would cost more than the
iPhone 17 Pro Max. However, it now appears that it will cost less than the
iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max but more than the iPhone 17. In that way, it will replace the
"Plus" iPhone in the lineup as a middle ground in price between the
17 and the 17 Pro.
Pro Motion display technology with a maximum
refresh rate of 120 Hz is expected to be added to all four iPhone models
released in 2025. This means that Pro Motion will no longer be a feature that
is only available on Pro iPhone models. The change will be enabled by LTPO OLED
displays that Apple is rumored to be using for all of the iPhone 17
models. Always-on display technology is
also enabled by LTPO display technology, but it's not yet clear if always-on
will come to all models or remain exclusive to the Pro iPhone models.
Apple may replace the Ceramic Shield
front-facing display this year with a new anti-reflective material that is more
resistant to scratches and will better withstand drops and dings. There are
rumors that the material will be better than the Ceramic Shield that is
currently in use. We get new iPhone colors every year, and while we don't know
what colors to expect for the iPhone 17 models just yet, Apple undoubtedly has
something fresh in the works.
iPhone 17
This year, Apple is planning for an iPhone 17,
an iPhone 17 Air, an iPhone 17 Pro, and an iPhone 17 Pro Max, but there will be
no iPhone 17 Plus in the lineup. Due to
low sales and low customer interest, Apple is dropping the "Plus"
iPhone. The majority of rumors focus on the iPhone 17 Air and iPhone 17 Pro
models, but the standard iPhone 17 will look very similar to the current iPhone
16.
There is a possibility of a new
display size, but we have not heard much about updates that are specific to the
iPhone 17 thus far. The iPhone 17 could be the same size as the iPhone 16 Pro,
measuring 6.3 inches, up from 6.1 inches. Rumors suggest that Apple plans to
eliminate the Plus model in 2025, so there may be only a single lower-cost
device, and at 6.3 inches, it would be in between the size of the current
6.1-inch iPhone 15 and the 6.7-inch iPhone 15 Plus. As a result, the display sizes would be 6.3
inches for the Pro, 6.9 inches for the Pro Max, and 6.6 inches for the slim
model.
Display
There are a few enhancements coming to the iPhone 17's display, with Apple adding a new coating and planning to bring Pro features to standard models.

The iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Air are expected to use the same OLED panel as the current iPhone 16 Pro models, which is sourced from Samsung. The panel has a 30 percent increase in brightness and improved longevity compared to the prior-generation iPhone 16 display.
