On April 10, 2025, a tragic helicopter crash occurred in New York City's Hudson River, resulting in the deaths of all six individuals on board.

Victims

The victims included a family of five from Barcelona, Spain: Agustín Escobar, president of Siemens Spain; his wife, Merce Camprubi Montal; and their three children, aged 4, 5, and 11. The pilot, a 36-year-old, also perished in the crash.

Crash Details

The Bell 206L-4 LongRanger IV helicopter, operated by New York Helicopters, departed from the Downtown Manhattan Heliport at 2:59 p.m. for a sightseeing tour. Approximately 18 minutes into the flight, at 3:17 p.m., the helicopter experienced an in-flight breakup and crashed upside down into the Hudson River near Pier 40. Eyewitnesses reported hearing loud noises before seeing the helicopter disintegrate mid-air.

Emergency Response

Emergency responders, including the New York City Fire Department and the U.S. Coast Guard, arrived promptly at the scene. Four individuals were pronounced dead at the site, while the remaining two succumbed to their injuries at the hospital.

Investigation

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have initiated an investigation into the cause of the crash. Preliminary reports indicate that the helicopter suffered a catastrophic mechanical failure mid-flight.

Reactions

New York City Mayor Eric Adams expressed his condolences, stating, "Our hearts go out to the families of those who were onboard." Spain's Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez described the incident as an "unimaginable tragedy" and offered support to the victims' families.

This incident marks the deadliest helicopter crash in New York City since 2018.
